Will any recent plextors be added to the supported list?

local stores don't have any of the plextors on the compatibility list.

A couple carry the 800 series.

New Plextor drives are only rebadged drives from other manufacturers. Only the firmware is improved(?) by Plextor. These drives are even not fully supported by Plextools itself.
So if you want to do q-checks with these drives, then you will probably have to flash the origin manufacturer firmware into the drive and use the relating manufacturer command set in qpxtool.
Plextor Premium, PX-8432A, PX-124TS, PX-2410A, PX-712A, PX-716A, PX-755A, PX-760A
LG 4040B, Toshiba 1612, 1712, Yamaha CRW-F1, Samsung SH-202N

Thank you for the answer.

Would it be worth trying to find and stock up on the 700 series, if no other manufacturer is adding that type of feature to new writers

If you want accurate q-checks, then there is no really alternative to a real Plextor drive (with Sanyo-Chipset). If you want scanning, then take a real (used) Plextor (ebay). If you want just well written media, then you could take a Pioneer 112 for example.
